Bathroom Plants can add a wonderful splash of colour to an otherwise monochrome room, but did you know that plants can also be functional in the bathroom? Plants help to improve the air quality, improve your mental state, and reduce dampness. Whether with or without natural light, there should always be a place for plants in your bathroom!

Breathe Easier with Plants in the Bathroom

Bathroom plants help to purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the room so that the air feels and smells fresher. Who wouldn’t want that in a room where—let’s be honest—freshness is sometimes a problem. The extra oxygen in the air also makes you feel more energetic, which can be a bonus first thing in the morning or after a long day!

Steamy No More

If you enjoy hot baths or showers, then having a plant in the room can help to absorb the resulting steam. While you enjoy your soak, your bathroom plant will be soaking up the moisture from the air, reducing the amount of condensation that ends up on surfaces in the bathroom. That’s a valuable service the plant is doing to help avoid unwanted germs and bacteria from proliferating in the areas where moisture collects.

Where to Put Bathroom Plants

There’s nowhere you can’t put a plant in the bathroom. Check Pinterest, and you’ll see that plants in the shower are a popular trend, especially in open showers. In a smaller bathroom or one with an enclosed shower, put a plant on a windowsill, on a shelf, hanging from the ceiling or put larger, tall plants on the floor.

Plants That Love the Bathroom

Bamboo, snake plants, dracaena, peace lily, and all kinds of ferns do very well in the high humidity of the bathroom. Air plants are also well-suited to the bathroom and don’t require much maintenance. If your thumb is not particularly green, but you want to take on a plant in the bathroom, try a spider plant or aloe vera. Both are very hearty (making them popular houseplants) and can withstand a lot of light or no natural light at all.

Plants just make a room feel good, and that goes for the bathroom as much as any other room in the house. So find some space for a plant and reap the many benefits. If you are thinking about bathroom renovations, think green and build in some space for plants into your design.
